YF --> ANIME ...Episode GUIDE --> YU-GI-OH! --> EPISODE 2: THE GAUNTLET IS THROWN
Later on, Joey and Yugi are talking about his performance earlier, and Yugi and offers to take a look at his deck. To Yugi's surprise, every card in the deck is a monster, and although Joey doesn't see what the problem is, Yugi tells him that the whole point of the game is to combine your monsters with Magic cards to increase their strength. Suddenly the reality hits Joey like a punch in the stomach, and Joey pleads for Yugi to tell him more, grabbing his shirt. Despite the sudden change in tone, Yugi keeps his cool, and explains to Joey that his grandfather is the real game expert in the family, and he would be happy to teach him. As promised, Yugi takes Joey to his grandfather's Game Shop. As the door sweeps open, Grandpa is in the middle of pinning a poster up on the wall. It is an advertisement for the upcoming Duel Monsters Championships, and shows two Duel Monsters fighting. Alerting Grandpa of their presence, Yugi tells him that he's brought him a new student, and Joey says that it's him. Grandpa warns him, however, that is a very complex game, and he must be willing to work hard. Of course, after being reminded by Yugi that Tea beat him five times in a row, he concludes that he needs help and is willing to work hard for it. Grandpa begins to ask him a few basic questions to see how much he knows, but Joey is oblivious to all of them. This is gonna take a while... It's the final of the Regional championships, and Yugi and the gang are settling down to watch it on television. The announcer introduces the duelists as Weevil Underwood and Rex Raptor. Joey says that it should have been him there, but Tea tells him that those guys are in another league, despite the fact Joey's been training for weeks. Just as he starts to remember the horrible times that he had during those lessons, Grandpa enters carrying a package. He tells Joey that it's time for his lesson, but he soon retracts the statement by saying that it was a joke, and that he's very proud of how far Joey has come. Joey's eyes fill emotionally with tears and he goes to hug Grandpa, but Grandpa moves at the last moment and Joey finds himself face-down on the floor. Grandpa hands the package to Yugi, saying that it came for him. He notes that it's from industrial illusions, and Joey realises that that's the company that makes Duel Monsters. Why would they be sending a package to him? Yugi thinks that it could be something to do with him defeating Kaiba, and although it wasn't an official match, it did make Kaiba drop out of the tournament! Joey comments that just hearing Kaiba's name gives him a headache. Tristan suddenly directs their attention to the TV, telling them that Raptor has just stomped Weevil. Yugi explains to Joey that Weevil duels with insects whilst Rex duels with dinosaurs. Although Joey laughs at the concept of Insects vs. Dinosaurs, convinced that Rex has got the duel in the bag, Yugi warns him that he shouldn't underestimate Weevil. He's an excellent strategist. But the stadium fills with a mixture of gasps and cheers as Rex plays the strongest monster in his deck: Twin-Headed King Rex (1600/1200)! The announcer says that they'll be back after the break, leaving the gang in anticipation. -----------------Intermission----------------- It's Weevil's turn, and surprisingly, Weevil plays Basic Insect (500/700), saying sarcastically that all he has is a weak little bug. Joey says that the place would be covered in bug guts, and Rex declares an attack on the insect. But Weevil activates a trap card: Infinite Dismissal! Although Weevil calls it "Vortex" for short. It stops the attack of King Rex. Then he activates the Magic Card, Laser Cannon, which causes King Rex to be destroyed and Rex to lose the championships. Suddenly, a trap door opens in the stadium floor, and the announcer declares that to present the trophie is the creator of Duel Monsters, Maximillian Pegasus. Pegasus, the same person who appeared at the end of Episode 1, rises from the floor and hands Weevil the trophie, as well as a vocal invitation to take part in the upcoming championships at Duelist Kingdom. Later, Pe Back at the house, Grandpa reminds Yugi that with all the excitement he forgot to open his package. Curious as to what it could be, Yugi opens the box to find a glove, two small, golden stars, and a video tape. Tristan thinks that maybe there's an explanation on the tape, and so they put it in. The face of Maximillian Pegasus flashed onto the screen, and he greets "Little Yugi" with a smile. Tea points out that they just saw him on TV, and Pegasus tells them that Seto Kaiba's defeat at Yugi's hands has intrigues him, and he would like to test his so-called "amazing" dueling skills personally. Everyone is confused by this, and Joey doesn't get how he can fight a duel against a video tape. Side-smiling, Pegasus slowly pulls back his hair that was previously covering his left eye to reveal a large, golden sphere where the eyeball should be. It glows for a moment, and quickly the world around them grows dark and cold, everyone except Yugi and Pegasus becoming frozen in their place. Yugi questions this sudden change in atmosphere, and Pegasus explains that they're no longer in the world Yugi knows. But he will return him after they duel. Then it's time to duel! The Millennium puzzle around his neck glows for a moment and once again Yugi becomes taller and stronger than before. Strangely, Pegasus isn't fazed by this. He explains that they shall hold a special duel with a time limit of 15 minutes. Whoever has the most life points after 15 minutes wins. Instantly, Pegasus begins, and places one card face-down on the field. He asked Yugi if he's nervous, and says that Yugi has never faced a duelist like him before. Yugi answers that no matter how good Pegasus is, he will beat him to save his friends. However, merely a moment after Yugi draws, Pegasus tells him that he won't beat anyone with that dragon card. Sure enough, Yugi had drawn Koumori Dragon, and Yugi is completely baffled. How did he know? Pegasus activates his Dragon Capture Jar which, as he explains, draws the Koumori Dragon from the card and locks it away, never to be used against him. Before taking his turn, Pegasus asks Yugi if he believes there is magic in the cards. Yugi responds with "You should know, you invented the game", but Pegasus denies that. He says that Ancient Egyptians played the game thousands of years ago, only not with cards. They battled with real monsters and real magic, in a mystical realm known as the "Shadow Realm". It is this realm which they are in now. These games were called "Shadow Games". Of course, Yugi dismisses this as nonsense by saying that these monsters can't be real. Pegasus doesn't reply, but instead summons Dragon Piper (200/1800). He used Dragon Piper's effect to free the Koumori Dragon from the Dragon Capture Jar, but puts it under his control! Naturally he attacks instantly, and although Yugi counters with Sliver Fang (1200/800), his life points drop to 1500, Pegasus begins to explain. 5000 years ago, a brave and powerful Pharaoh locked the magic of the Shadow Games away, capturing the energies in seven mystical "Millennium Items". Yugi wonders if his puzzle is one of these items, and Pegasus continues that there is magic sealed away inside that puzzle. If only he knew how to use it. Yugi asks Pegasus why he is telling him this, but Pegasus says that they must get back to their duel, placing a card face-down. Yugi is curious as to whether Pegasus can really read his mind. As if answering his question, Pegasus brushes his hair back once again, and the Zombie Warrior card appears in the pupil of the golden eye. Meanwhile, Yugi is deciding which card to play, hoping that he can take Pegasus by surprise, and after a moment of decision making, he opts to play Zombie Warrior. But when Pegasus chuckles under his breath, he stops. Pegasus definitely knows what he's about to do. Which gives him an idea. What if he was to draw a new card from the deck without even looking at it. Then he wouldn't know what card he summons, and therefore exposing whether Pegasus can really read his mind or if it's some kind of trick. Not a moment after Yugi has moved a card directly from the top of the deck to the field, Pegasus flips his Sun Shower trap card, which he says "will make even Zombies lie down and play dead". But Yugi hadn't played the Zombie Warrior. The card he has actually played is: The Dark Magician (2500/2100)! The Dark Magician attacks and destroys Koumori Dragon, bringing Pegasus' life points down to 1200 Life Points. But Pegasus won't give up that easy; he summons a very rare monster - his ultimate card. Illusionist Faceless Mage (1200/2200)! He boasts about its strength, although this confuses Yugi, with Dark Magician being much stronger. But then Pegasus combines Faceless Mage with the mystical Eye of Illusion, which Yugi had never seen before! There are only 500 Life Points left, and he's up by 300 Life Points, but only because Pegasus is toying with him. He has to find a way to beat Pegasus at his own game - and he may have just the card to do it. He summons Celtic Guardian (1400/1200) and declares an attack on the Faceless Mage, but Pegasus retaliates with Dark Magic attack! Yugi says that the faceless mage doesn't have a "Dark Magic" attack, but his eyes widen in shock as he sees his Dark Magician appear by Pegasus' side, the Eye of Illusion glowing on his head.
When the face of Summoned Skull is mere inches away from the "face" of "Faceless" Mage, both monsters disappear in a flash of light, leaving a stunned and angered Yugi. He quickly glances in anxiety at the video LED Display, and sees that the time is up. Pegasus smirks, and says that if Yugi was unable to complete the attack, Pegasus would have lost. But he didn't, did he? Although Yugi is devastated by his defeat, he accepts it, and is glad that it is over. But Pegasus says that it is far from over, and that next time they duel, they will play for much higher stakes. Yugi denies it: "I'm done with your games." But Pegasus laughes and tells him that, given the proper incentive, anyone can be made to play his game. Suddenly, a burst of magic zooms out of the television and strikes Grandpa, sucking out his very soul into the television. As the soul of Grandpa disappears into the glass, which no longer shows the evil face of Pegasus, the TV turns to static, and the world returns to normal, leaving a confused group of friends around it, and a distraught Yugi pounding the television screen.
