YU-GI-OH! 5D'S

Update on the Putfile situation. It seems their support department is still non-existent, so unless it's magically fixed it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to upload the episode for online viewing. Sorry.

Don't forget, however, that you can still download the episode from our download section (it's the same size as the online one would be). Until Putfile fix the situation, or I find a new place to upload it, I guess we'll be switching to pure download for now.

In the mean time, here is my review for the first episode. (Careful, there are spoilers, so you may want to watch it first if you're go all River Song on things like that).

Episode 1: Ready, Get Set, DUEL!

As the episode starts I wait in anticipation. The first clip of visual changes - the lack of the name "Jack Atlus" from the holographic sign - is immediately noticeable. The "No.1 Turbo Duelist" appears from the tunnel, and what do I hear? Why that familiar British accent that made Bakura so distinguishable.

The first scene is well done by 4Kids. Besides the obvious changes, the call of "Ready, Get set, Duel!" finally gave me that exciting feel I haven't felt in years. The scene of the duel intersperced with Yusei is pretty much unchanged, except the scenes have a couple of rearrangements. The lack of background music was a faithful and rare move done by 4Kids here. Though Yusei's voice where it wasn't before kind of ruins the feel of mystery you got from the orginal.

The intro was a good choice of music, though the video seemed a little slap-dash as it generally does. As the music finishes, the action kicks off with a full backstory about satellite, "the city", acceleration chips and so forth. The duel between Yusei and (the, if I remember correctly, unamed) Ushio kicks off, and the voice of Tristan awakens a feeling of nostalgia. But I have a new show to focus on. The voice does, however, suit Yusei quite well, I must say. Shame the same can't be said for Jack. The first full duelling scene is done with non-stop action and the familiar constant background music (I'm glad we're back to the old-fashioned orchestral music).

Ushio special summons (note the keeping of the word "special") Montage Dragon. What is that I see? An full explanation of Montage Dragon's effect? That's something we haven't seen before - I hope they keep that, in my opininon that was a nice touch by 4Kids. Just as I wish for it, there it is. An explanation of tuner and synchro monsters. I'm growing to love that computer.

So Yusei performs the first demonstration of a Synchro Summon, accompanied by a sudden climax of music and the cringe-worthy words "Let's REV IT UP!". I knew the old 4Kids was in there somewhere.

One constant aspect of this scene which is very 4Kids, however, is the addition of random dialogue. I heard myself groan a few times at words echoing from behind smoke or when staring at the back of Ushio's head. Not only that, but even when they are moving their mouths, you can tell 4Kids had a hard time coming up with dialogue to fill the gaps. They must have had a team of writers working around the clock to come up with gold such as "When I was growing up on the streets I learnt to be resourceful..." and "Reminds me of the time you tried to break curfu...".

In conclusion, the first episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's was dubbed faithfully by 4Kids. Well, as faithfully as 4Kids can ever be. They kept ALL the names, which is brilliant, though I'm not quite sure about some of the voices (especially Nerve and Blitz - and even with an English voice I still can't tell whether Rally is supposed to be a boy or girl). But aside from the nonsensical random dialogue, it's possible that 4Kids may actually do a not bad job with this one. We'll have to watch a few more to find out.

Several updates - and NEW TOURNAMENT

Hello again everyone,

Thought I would update you on the situation. I've just got my laptop up again, but unfortunately this is the perfect time for the universe to come around and annoy me again. I'm sure a lot of you have noticed Putfile seems to be having some kind of mid-life crisis. All the new 5Ds episodes I have recently uploaded seem to have not entirely gone through, and a lot of my media has gone down. I'm trying to get a decent answer out of Putfile (believe me I am as annoyed as you).

Anyway, on a lighter note, there is a new tournament starting on Yu-Gi-Oh! Fans. It will use YVD as usual. If you want to sign up, visit this link...

Laptop down

Just thought I would let everyone know that my laptop sort of died over the past week which is the reason for why there were no new episodes. Touch wood, it's all working okay now, and episode 17 is now up. Bare in mind that I still don't entirely trust it (it sort of just started working again randomly) so if the updates suddenly stop again then you know why.

News Regarding 5D's Dubbed

Okay quick update on the 4Kids situation.

I have to say, 4Kids actually look like they are doing 5D's pretty well. As far as we have seen, they haven't changed the character names at all, and although they've made Jack Atlas British (which, being British, I'm sure doesn't bother me as much as it bothers others) they actually seem to be sticking to the story - with a few minor differences of course. I won't give anything away obviously though, cause I'm sure some of you want a surprise.

But, 4Kids are doing something very interesting here. They are letting us CHOOSE THE THEME TUNE! What we can do is vote on one of the several theme tunes they have there on their site and then they'll pick the one with the most votes, duh. Just go to:

and decide. Personally, I quite like Hyper Drive, though I think that Need for Speed would definitely make a good closing theme. So, which theme should it be? You decide.

On a less local note, the subtitled Japanese version of 5D's is now up to 11 on the site and I am uploading 12 right now. Enjoy!

Hello again YFs,

Just a brief note to update you on the latest site goings-on. Sorry about the delays but Putfile has been playing up again lately and unfortunately it took me about a week to get up 5D's episode 4. I have, however, just got it up along with five, and six and onwards are on their way.

Also, as several users were kind enough to let me know, it seems that the dubbed series of 5D's will premiere on September 13th.

Evening all. Been a while.

Just thought I'd update on any big developments on the site. As you may realise, I am currently approaching the end of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Season 3 dubbed, and I'm afraid that is also the end of GX dubbed. 4Kids have actually decided to no longer dub Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, in favour of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds. So, after I finish up GX, I will try and update both GX and 5D's in Japanese.

The dubbed version of 5D's actually premiered the other day at the San Diego Comic Con, for those of you who didn't know. I couldn't be there myself (on account of the fact I live about 8000 miles away), but for anyone who did see it I hope you'll enjoy it. I don't know when it will make its TV premiere (if anyone knows let me know), but until it does I'm afraid I can't get it on the site.

Well, I'll keep you all updated on my latest goings-on. See ya soon!

Alright. There was a hacker who took revenge on DymentriX for problems they had in the past. TJ saved the cbox and took it to his forum, and I reasoned with the hacker to get the root account back. TJK now is root admin of the forum, and he's made me an SS again.

We're working to fix everything. Give us time.

Edit: Most of it has been fixed. But I'd also like to take the time to apologize for anyone who was disturbed by the images the hacker posted.

I owe you all an update on the 5D's situation, so here it is.

Well, episode 2 aired yesterday, and as I write this I am trying to upload the HQ RAW version. That will be up later today if nothing goes wrong. Unfortunately you may have to rely on that for a while, because there is something up with the Putfile server (where we store our streamable online eps) and I can't seem to upload anything atm.

I'm trying to upload the subtitled version of episode 1 for online viewing, but it's just not working, so please be patient.

On top of everything, megaupload is acting very strange and I can't download anything, so I've got that to deal with as well.

Just one more day until Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's is released! That said, we should hopefully be getting episode 1 up here (wow I've never said that before) some time before the weekend. Bare in mind, it will be in Japanese with no subtitles, but frankly that's good enough for me. And hopefully I'll be able to get a subtitled version soon.

I have added episode 167 of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX in Japanese subtitled form. Episodes 168 and onwards are underway. I still can't believe Yu-Gi-Oh! GX has actually finished! I haven't watched the episode yet. I want the experience to be perfect so I'm waiting for a subtitled version or at least a translation.

We in the English speaking world have still not made it past episode 138 of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. Hopefully we'll be getting it up soon. Doesn't look like CITV are airing them anymore, but over in the US I believe they are just about to air it, so fingers crossed they don't go back to the beginning again.

This week'sCard of the Day was the new DARK monarch, Caius. Like other monarchs, this card is a 6-star, 2400 ATK monster, that relies on its own tribute summon to use the effect. This one, basically, allows you to inflict 1000 points damage to your opponent by removing one card from the field when it's summoned. Is it as good as the other monarchs? Our noble reviewers are the judge of that.
